Providing Metro Detroit, Troy, and the Surrounding Areas with Quality Epi-LASIK
About Epi-LASIK
Epi-LASIK is a new vision correction procedure that combines techniques used in LASIK and LASEK. It was designed to reduce the risk of certain complications associated with other forms refractive surgery. Our ophthalmologists provide Epi-LASIK to Michigan residents who suffer from myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism and are not good candidates for LASIK eye surgery due to having thin corneas. Because there’s no possibility of a flap detachment after the procedure, Epi-LASIK may also be preferable for Michigan residents who are at risk for eye injuries either because of their profession, or active lifestyle (contact sport players, servicemen and women, etc.).
The Epi-LASIK Procedure
At our eye care center near Detroit and Troy, Epi-LASIK patients are first given anesthetic eye drops to ensure that any discomfort they may experience during the procedure will be minimal. Next, a LASIK surgeon at our facility uses a plastic blade called an epithelial separator to create a thin, hinged layer of tissue in the epithelium, the surface of the cornea. Using the epithelial separator, as opposed to a microkeratome as in traditional LASIK, results in a significantly less reduction of corneal tissue. After the sheet of tissue is created, it is then gently drawn back to allow the inner layers of the cornea to be shaped with an excimer laser. Once the cornea has been sculpted, the epithelial layer is replaced. After surgery, Epi-LASIK patients are given special contact lenses that are designed to protect the epithelial tissue as it heals over the next few days.
