LASIK
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It is the most commonly performed surgery to correct corneal abnormalities that cause myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. LASIK has been instrumental in helping millions of people worldwide to eliminate or reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. The LASIK Procedure
A patient undergoing LASIK surgery will first receive anesthetic eye drops to ensure that the entire procedure is pain-free. An instrument called a microkeratome is then used to create a thin, hinged flap in the outermost layer of the cornea. At our ophthalmic center, we use the Amadeus™ microkeratome for its unparalleled precision and stability. The Amadeus™ microkeratome allows our surgeons to customize the flap size and thickness for each patient.
After the corneal flap is created, it is gently lifted aside to expose the tissue underneath. An excimer laser, which emits a cool, ultraviolet light beam, is then used to reshape the cornea. Re-shaping the cornea allows it to focus light more precisely, resulting in improved vision. Once the underlying tissue has been sculpted, the corneal flap is replaced and allowed to re-attach naturally. The entire LASIK procedure lasts approximately 15 minutes total for both eyes.

Customize Your LASIK Surgery
Custom LASIK vision correction improves upon other refractive procedures in that it allows the LASIK surgeon to reshape the cornea based not only on a patient’s eyeglass prescription but also on Wavefront™ considerations. The ALLEGRETTO WAVE™ laser incorporates higher order refractive errors based on wavefront™ data to provide a custom ablation. With this information, the excimer laser is able to more precisely restructure the cornea. This means that our Birmingham, Detroit, and Troy patients who undergo custom LASIK are more likely to achieve 20/20 vision than patients who undergo conventional LASIK. In fact, in a study conducted by the FDA, 87 percent of patients who underwent custom LASIK had 20/20 eyesight a year after the surgery. A full 60 percent of nearsighted patients experienced 20/16 vision.
Another advantage of custom LASIK is that it can correct what are known as higher-order aberrations. These visual distortions include glare, halos and impaired night vision. Previous vision correction procedures were only able to treat lower aberrations such as nearsightedness and farsightedness.
Bladeless LASIK

Through advanced surface ablation, our ophthalmologists can perform “bladeless LASIK” surgery. Since the need to create a corneal flap has until now prevented patients with thin corneas and other conditions from being able to undergo LASIK, advanced surface ablation has opened the door to enhanced vision for numerous individuals.
