Millions of patients have eliminated their need for glasses or contacts and corrected refractive errors using LASIK.
Laser-Assisted Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK, is the most common laser vision corrective surgery in the world. Some common conditions LASIK can correct include:
LASIK can be done in about 15 minutes total for both eyes. Even more surprising is that you’ll notice vision improvements almost immediately.
Not in love with your appearance when wearing glasses? Ditch them and feel like the true you—now with better vision.

Before performing any surgery, we thoroughly evaluate patients’ eyes to ensure it’s right for them. To help keep you comfortable during LASIK surgery, we use anesthetic eye drops. Then we use our state-of-the-art WaveLight® FS200 Femtosecond Laser to create a thin flap in the outermost layer of the cornea, which takes only about 6 seconds.
Once the corneal flap is created, our Allegretto Wave™ excimer laser, which has the largest FDA-approved range for precise vision correction, is used to precisely reshape the cornea. The corneal flap is then repositioned to allow your eyes to heal as quickly and comfortably as possible.
Similar to LASIK, Photorefractive Keratectomy, or PRK, is also used to eliminate your dependence on glasses and contacts. One of the main differences between the two corrective surgeries is that PRK doesn’t require a flap to be cut. Instead, the entire correction procedure is performed under our Allegretto Wave™ excimer laser. PRK is a safe option for refractive surgery and serves as an excellent alternative for patients who are not candidates for LASIK.
To see an object clearly, our eyes focus light by bending it twice. First, light passes through your cornea, the clear front part of your eye. Then, as light passes through, it is projected onto the retina, which transmits the image to your brain.
Not seeing images clearly, or having blurry vision, is the result of a problem with the light-bending process. Laser vision correction aims to perfect the image entering the eye by reshaping the cornea to eliminate these focusing problems and refractive errors.
Correcting your vision is an important decision—and one that should be trusted with the best. At Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey Eye Surgeons, we provide excellence in every aspect of eye care. We offer services to residents in and near Birmingham, Detroit, and Troy. Our ophthalmologists are leaders in the field of LASIK and PRK and have lectured internationally. Between their knowledge, skill, and advanced equipment, they’re prepared to help you see life clearly again.
This is the most common and most important question about any laser vision corrective surgery. While of course there are risks associated with any procedure, yes, LASIK and PRK have been shown to be safe after more than 20 years of experience and 7,000 studies.
During the procedures, there is no pain as the eye is fully anesthetized with eye drops before anything begins. After both procedures, you may initially experience some sensitivity and dryness which the prescribed drops will help to resolve, and the first few days of PRK often do have some discomfort during the initial healing phase.
The short answer is it depends. Our surgeons would need to complete a thorough evaluation of your eyes prior to recommending whether you are a candidate for either procedure. Start by completing the self-test below.
While these are generally not covered under traditional health insurance, you are able to use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Spending Account (HSA) to pay for the procedures.
