Proudly Serving all of Southeastern Michigan including Troy, Detroit, and Birmingham – Bladeless LASIK Eye Surgery
Advanced Surface Ablation (ELASA)
At our eye care center, one of our goals is to provide residents in and around Troy, Detroit, and Birmingham with LASIK eye surgery and other vision correction procedures of the highest caliber. Towards this end, our ophthalmologists have incorporated a recent advancement in refractive surgery into their practice – advanced surface ablation (ELASA). This procedure allows our doctors to provide patients with all of the benefits of LASIK eye surgery without the potential for flap complications. Patients who have been told they were not good candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas, a high degree of refractive error, or other conditions, may now be able to safely enhance their vision thanks to this new procedure.
LASIK Eye Surgery Without the Blade
In conventional LASIK eye surgery, an instrument known as a microkeratome is used to create a flap in the cornea (the clear covering of the eye), which allows the LASIK surgeon to then shape the underlying tissue in order to improve the patient’s vision. While this technique has proven to be an effective way to perform LASIK eye surgery, individuals with thin corneas are vulnerable to complications if not enough tissue is left for the eye to heal properly.
To eliminate the potential for flap complications, our ophthalmologists offer the option of advanced surface ablation (ELASA). Rather than using a bladed instrument to create a corneal flap, advanced surface ablation (ELASA) involves the application of a mild alcohol solution to gently loosen and remove cells on the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium). Once this is done, our doctors can then carefully ablate (remove) surface layers of corneal tissue with the ALLEGRETTO WAVE™ excimer laser – one of the most advanced laser platforms available today.
By combining the safety of the advanced surface ablation (ELASA) technique with the precision of the ALLEGRETTO WAVE™ laser, our ophthalmologists are able to provide residents in and near Troy, Detroit, and Birmingham with LASIK eye surgery of unparalleled quality.
Benefits of Bladeless LASIK Eye Surgery through Advanced Surface Ablation (ELASA)
- Eliminates potential flap complications including flap wrinkles, buttonholes, and epithelial ingrowth.
- Effectively treats all levels of farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism
- Reduces dry eye by leaving the nerves that produce tears intact
- May be safely performed on individuals with thin corneas
- May be safely performed on individuals with anterior surface corneal dystrophy
Advanced surface ablation (ELASA) represents a giant step forward in the evolution of LASIK eye surgery, and while the temporary drawbacks of this procedure include an extended recovery time and increased discomfort, the benefits clearly make advanced surface ablation (ELASA) an excellent choice for quality conscious consumers.
