Dr. Portney is a board-certified comprehensive ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and refractive surgery, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma management. He is dedicated to delivering precise, evidence-based care while ensuring each patient feels informed, comfortable, and confident in their treatment plan. Known for his thoughtful and patient-centered approach, Dr. Portney emphasizes clear communication, individualized care, and a seamless experience from consultation through treatment. He completed his undergraduate education, medical degree, and ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan, including training at the renowned Kellogg Eye Center. Dr. Portney graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with Distinction (Top 10%) and special Research Honors, and was awarded the Dean’s Commendation for Excellence in Clinical Skills and the Art of Medicine, recognizing his ability to combine technical expertise with compassionate patient care. During his residency, Dr. Portney won the Aizman Award, the highest distinction in clinical training, as well as the Howard Resident Prize for Glaucoma Excellence and the James M. LaBerge Award for Research.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Portney has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and has pioneered research in surgical cost analysis using time-driven activity-based costing. He has lectured at large national and international conferences and continues to collaborate with leading academic institutions, contributing to advancements in both clinical outcomes and healthcare value.
