Understanding cataracts

What is a Cataract?

To see clearly, light must pass smoothly through your eye's clear natural lens and focus on the retina at the back of the eye. A cataract occurs when proteins in that lens break down and clump together, creating a cloudy spot that blocks light. Over time, this makes your vision feel increasingly blurry, dim, or washed out.
While cataracts are a normal part of aging, they gradually worsen over time. Stronger prescription glasses can help temporarily, but the only permanent solution is cataract surgery.
During this routine procedure, your surgeon removes the clouded lens and replaces it with an intraocular lens (IOL). Because this new lens provides a major portion of your focusing power, choosing the right IOL is one of the most important decisions you will make for your daily lifestyle.
