Cataract surgery benefits more than eyes

What if our vision could be restored with a relatively simple procedure? For patients with cataracts, it can.

A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that the benefits of cataract surgery extend beyond better vision – it also results in a lower risk of hip fractures in the elderly.

Each eye has a clear lens that focuses light and allows us to see. As we age, the lens can become dull, causing a condition known as a cataract. Similar to smudged reading glasses, a dull lens in the eye results in blurry vision.

Laser Option for Cataract Surgery

The latest innovation is laser cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is done more than any other operation in America — a million and a half times a year.

Cataracts typically require surgical removal and replacement of the eye’s lens. A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye, causing vision loss that cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or corneal refractive surgery like LASIK.

Most cataracts are associated with the aging process and are common among older Americans. In fact, recent studies have estimated that 20.5 million Americans over age 40 (17 percent) have a cataract in one or both eyes, and more than 6 million in this age group (5 percent) already have had cataract surgery. Smaller lens softening grid reduces effective phaco time

Femtosecond laser lens fragmentation with a smaller lens softening grid significantly reduced effective phacoemulsification time, according to a study.

“The choice of the grid pattern used for lens fragmentation and softening is an important factor in further reducing the [effective phaco time],” the study authors said. “This may have important implications for the future as we continue to strive toward eliminating ultrasound energy by enhancing microincision surgery and by developing new IOL designs.”

The prospective, randomized clinical trial included 160 eyes of 160 patients with senile cataract who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. The Health /Housing Fair is open to the general public. We anticipate a great turnout for this event. The day will include a variety of health screening and information booths hosted by health professionals, community providers and housing specialists. We have scheduled the Flu Shot Clinic to be on the same date as the Health/Housing Fair. This event is well publicized through area television and prints media, including advertisements in the Oakland Press and Spinal Column.

Coffee Associated With Glaucoma

Based out of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, the researchers followed 78,977 women and 41,202 men, all initially without glaucoma who’d had eye examinations from the 1980s until 2008. They asked them all about their coffee (and other caffeine) habits, then compared them to their medical records if they reported a history of glaucoma, looking specifically for diagnoses of exfoliation glaucoma. They also counted diagnoses of “exfoliative glaucoma suspect.” That included patients who had high pressures in their eyes, changes in their optic nerve, and/or visual field problems. Cataract, a clouding of the lens of the eye, is the leading cause of vision loss in people older than 55. More than half have some degree of cataract development, and more than half of people over age 80 either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.
