Vision Restoration – LASIK Surgery
Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey uses precision lasers to permanently correct vision problems during your LASIK surgery. LASIK is most successful at reversing nearsightedness. Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, exists when you can see nearby objects easily but objects in the distance are fuzzy. However, the procedure can also correct farsightedness and astigmatism.
There is over a 95% satisfaction rate among patients who have had LASIK, making this one of the most sought after elective surgeries in the country. Most people who have the surgery, recover at minimum 20/25 vision, which allows them to do many daily activities without needing glasses or contact lenses. Please note that reading glasses are often needed, especially as patient’s age.
To be a candidate for LASIK surgery, you should be in good health and have no underlying eye conditions. The outpatient procedure can be completed in an afternoon, and many patients are cleared to resume driving within 24 hours. You will need to avoid wearing contact lenses for several weeks prior to your surgery, and you will need to take antibiotics and prescription eye drops afterward.
The most common complication of LASIK surgery is dry eyes. For almost all patients, this condition resolves itself within six to twelve months. You should be prepared for dry eyes during this time frame, and use the prescription eye drops that you are provided with by your surgeon. It is very important to avoid rubbing your eyes after surgery, even if they feel irritated.
If you are interested in LASIK surgery, please make an appointment with Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. During your appointment, we will give you a comprehensive eye exam to see if you are a good candidate for the procedure and provide you more information and next steps.
How LASIK Surgery Has Improved
LASIK is a popular procedure we use to reduce or eliminate reliance on glasses. With new advancements in laser technology, LASIK surgery is even better. It can now be customized based on factors other than just your eyeglasses prescription. New measurements and enhanced lasers take into account higher order refractive errors to provide a more precise reshaping of the cornea. What does this mean for you? Patients who undergo customized LASIK surgery are even more likely to achieve a visual acuity of 20/20 after surgery when compared to those who underwent traditional LASIK. Some even attain vision better than 20/20!
Customizations in LASIK also take into account more than just your vision as it is measured in the office. Even with “perfect” vision, patients may still complain of issues like glare in bright sunlight or halos around headlights while driving at night. These are known as “higher-order aberrations” and are not taken into account with traditional LASIK. With the latest, most technologically advanced lasers, these higher order refractive errors can be corrected during your customized LASIK procedure to ensure your sharpest possible vision.
If you are considering LASIK surgery, ask us if a customized LASIK procedure might be right for you. Still wondering if LASIK is for you? Take our quiz to find out and contact Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey in Bloomfield Hills for an appointment.
What Happens During a LASIK Consultation?
If you’re thinking about having LASIK to improve your vision, you’ll first need to undergo a consultation to ensure you are a good candidate for the surgery. We first will conduct a thorough, dilated eye exam. During this exam, the overall health of your eyes will be assessed to ensure you do not have any problems that would preclude you from having LASIK.
While your eyes are dilated, we will measure your prescription in order to understand your visual potential. We will also assess the relationship between your two eyes in a binocular vision test. For optimal results after LASIK, both eyes need to be properly aligned and working together. Another screening test will be performed to gauge the quality and quantity of your tears; for patients with dry eyes, we may recommend treatment to improve your tear production before proceeding with surgery.
You will also undergo a variety of corneal measurements to ensure your cornea is a shape and thickness suitable for LASIK. If you wear contact lenses, you will need to leave them out for several weeks before corneal measurements are taken in order to ensure accurate results.
If you are considering LASIK eye surgery to improve your vision, contact the eye care specialists at Grosinger, Spigelman, and Grey in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan to set up your consultation visit. You may also visit our website and take a self-evaluation vision correction test.
Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK Surgery?
LASIK surgery for vision correction is a wonderful option for most people. However, not everyone is a good candidate. Below are some of the requirements to determine if LASIK may be the right choice for you.
- Your eyes are generally healthy. The most common problem that needs to be addressed prior to LASIK is dry eye. If you have problems with dryness, your symptoms may worsen after LASIK. Other diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma can interfere with your vision – depending on their severity, LASIK may not be an option.
- Your cornea must be of adequate thickness. During LASIK, our surgeon will sculpt your cornea in order to correct your vision. If your cornea is too thin, this can compromise the results.
- Your prescription must be within certain parameters. Patients with very high refractive errors may have unpredictable results after LASIK surgery. Depending on your prescription, our LASIK surgeon may recommend a different type of treatment for your refractive error.
- You must be old enough. During childhood and teenage years, your vision continues to change. The FDA has approved LASIK for individuals 18 years or older.
- Your vision must be stable. If your vision is still changing, LASIK may not provide you with the long-term results you’re expecting.
- You must not be pregnant or nursing. Hormones associated with pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause changes in the cornea. It’s recommended that patients wait several months after delivery or weaning before being assessed for LASIK.
- You must have good overall health. Patients with issues like uncontrolled diabetes and autoimmune diseases are at increased risk for complications from surgeries such as LASIK.
If you are interested in LASIK or another vision correction surgery, please contact Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey’s Bloomfield Hills office for an appointment. Our experienced ophthalmologists will examine your eyes to see what is best for you.
LASIK to Improve Your Sight
If you’re like most people, you may need corrective lenses – either glasses or contacts – in order to achieve your best vision. Approximately 75% of adults in the United States use vision correction of some kind. Glasses and contact lenses are used to correct what’s known as refractive error. When light enters the eye, it should ideally be focused on a very specific point on the retina in order to create a clear image. If light is focused at a point in front of or behind the retina, the result is refractive error. There are several different types of refractive error including myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), astigmatism and presbyopia. Near-sightedness is the most common type of refractive error in which objects in the distance are blurry, but objects up close are clear.
LASIK is a laser procedure that reshapes the cornea in order to correct refractive error. In individuals with no other eye problems, LASIK can mean freedom from glasses and contacts. By reshaping the cornea, our ophthalmologists can ensure that light focuses on the correct area of your retina to give you clear central vision. This procedure is particularly successful in adults who have a mild degree of myopia. Children under 18 may still experience changes in their degree of refractive error and are therefore encouraged to wait until their vision stabilizes before considering refractive surgeries such as LASIK.
If you’re tired of wearing glasses or contacts, contact Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan for an appointment, our ophthalmologists will examine your eyes to see if LASIK is the right choice for you.
Be Cool, Wear Shades: Protect Your Vision and Look Good Doing It
Sunglasses look cool. They come in numerous styles that it is easy to find a pair you love. There are classic cat’s eye and aviator frames as well as oval, rectangle, shield, and rimless designs. The key is finding a pair that offers 100% UVA and UVB protection for your eyes.
What Does the Sun Do to My Eyes?
Many learn at a young age that you are never supposed to look directly into the sun. It can cause damage to your retina that can lead to blindness. Even if you never stare into our favorite star, you can still be at risk for eye damage if you don’t wear sunglasses.
According to the National Eye Institute, approximately 20% of cataracts are caused by extended UV exposure. It can also worsen the symptoms of glaucoma.
Macular Degeneration causes a part of the retina, known as the macula, to deteriorate. This will impair vision and eventually lead to blindness. The U.S. National Library of Medicine published a study that found exposure to certain types of UV radiation can speed up macular degeneration.
Remember that you can experience sun damage on cloudy days. UV rays can pass through clouds, so you should still wear protection when it is overcast outside.
Finding the Right Sunglasses for Your Eyes
It is important to find the right type of sunglasses for your eyes so you will wear them and achieve the highest benefits. For example, surfers often wear wraparound shades for better sunlight protection next to the water. You may need something with a sturdy frame if you are playing a sport or working outdoors. Contact Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey today if you need a comprehensive eye exam before purchasing new prescription sunglasses.
Fireworks Eye Safety: Celebrate This Summer and Protect Your Vision
Summer is an exciting season. The weather gets warmer and people begin enjoying outdoor activities. One favorite family pastimes are setting off fireworks. They are most common around the beginning of July but are often enjoyed all summer long. That’s why it is so important to think about your eyes this month.
Fireworks-Related Eye Injuries Are Real
It is easy to dismiss stories of people being injured by fireworks as old wives’ tales, but the fact is that these incidents are very real. People can and do get hurt when using fireworks. Many times, the injury occurs due to a lack of safety measures while handling these festive explosives.
Nearly 11,000 people are rushed to the emergency room each year. Approximately 18% of these injuries involve the patient’s eyes. Eyes are the second highest area of injury next to skin burns. Out of those, bottle rockets cause 15% of all fireworks-related eye injuries.
While those statistics are concerning enough, parents and grandparents will be alarmed to learn that children under the age of 15 are the most frequently injured age group. Those harmless sparklers everyone loves to give kids make up around 10% of fireworks injuries.
What Can You Do to Protect Your Eyes This Summer?
You don’t have to give up fireworks completely. What can you do to protect your eyes and the eyes of those around you this summer?
- Plan to go to a professional firework display instead of setting up your own.
- When setting off fireworks, make sure everyone in the area wears safety glasses. Sunglasses or regular prescription glasses do not count.
- Never allow children to handle or be around fireworks unattended. Parents should be in the area to observe 100% of the time.
You can’t prevent every injury, but you can reduce the risk and reduce the severity of the injury if it happens.
Give Yourself the Gift of Great Sight: 5 Reasons to Have LASIK Eye Surgery
Over the past two decades, LASIK eye surgery has given people a way to get great sight even if they were not born with it. The FDA approved the procedure in 1998. It’s become more accessible over the years. Why should you consider talking to an ophthalmologist about LASIK surgery?
LASIK May Be Cheaper Than Buying Glasses or Contacts
The younger you are, the more money you may save by having LASIK. Consider how much you pay every year for new glasses and/or contacts. You may never have to spend that money again after having surgery.
Less To Worry About When Playing Sports or Swimming
If you live an active lifestyle, then LASIK may be a great choice for you. You won’t have to worry about wearing special eyewear to see clearly. Instead, you can get right into the game!
It’s Far More Convenient Than Glasses or Contacts
Glasses and contacts can be a big hassle. Think about how much time you spend cleaning, storing, and looking for your glasses or contacts. Or that annoying dryness and discomfort that comes with falling asleep with contacts. LASIK surgery can remove all those inconveniences and give you clear vision.
May Offer Clearer Sight For Some Patients
Some patients struggle with their eyesight. Contacts or glasses may not be enough. LASIK reshapes the eye to correct curvature, which means it has the potential to provide even better results.
