DMEK is a reliable surgical choice to cure degrading vision and swollen, murky corneas. This is the third and most recent evolution to help those suffering with Fuch’s Corneal Dystrophy and corneal endothelial dysfunction. It has been demonstrated to provide patients the best option to achieve at least 20/25 vision, speedy return to normal activities, and ward off potential vision-threatening rejection. As compared to its predecessors, DMEK is considered the best anatomical restoration procedure because it only requires a single cell layer and a thin membrane to cure cornea irregularities.
DMEK surgery is done as outpatient. To avoid discomfort, a topical anesthesia is applied through eye drops. The damaged layer of the cornea is removed and is replaced by a designated thin layer of new cornea. It is proven to offer a faster enhancement in vision capacity with very low risk of rejection. Its results enable the patient’s cornea to be closer to its original state.
There are several advantages that can be derived out from this technology including:

Advanced Surface Ablation is a laser procedure that effectively corrects vision problems such as; farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism using a minimally invasive method. ELASA is suited for those patients who are not fit for LASIK or those who are searching for another option to the LASIK method. This procedure provides patients notable vision enhancement through a safe process. ELASA does not involve a microkeratome blade which diminishes the risk of complications. Patients who undergo this method can accomplish their goal of much improved eyesight often eliminating reliance on glasses or contact lenses.
ELASA is performed on an outpatient basis. During the surgery, your eye surgeon will first remove the surface layer of the eye with a laser or with a solution of dissolved alcohol that loosens the epithelium so that it can be lifted easily. The cornea is then restructured with a laser to restore vision. A bandage contact lens is positioned over the eye to speed up the healing process of the operated eye. This bandage should be worn for approximately four days as instructed by the eye surgeon. Prescription eye drops are usually used to prevent infections and keep eyes moistened. Clear Lens Extraction is similar to cataract surgery as both involve the replacement of the eye’s natural lens with an artificial lens. In both procedures, the eye’s natural lens is removed. For some patients, CLE or RLE surgical solution is a better choice than laser vision correction to restore vision.
